Today I have thought a lot about the woman at the well. It kept popping up to me today in places and tonight I decided to dive deep into it. There are so many different ways you can go with this story but lets see if we can just fit a few of those in tonight.
Lets start off with some back story. We don’t have a name, she was a Samaritan woman and she was considered unclean by her own people. She was at the well during the day at the hottest time to avoid others. I guess you could call it shame.
Jesus sought her out though. He asked her for a drink. Now, in those times, he was breaking all kinds of social rules. Since He was a Jewish man asking a Samaritan woman for a drink and an unclean one at that. Everything was off about the situation, she was skeptical and He was genuine. He decided she would be the one that He revealed himself to as the Messiah. The first one! I just think about the chills of being there and witnessing this happen. He told her He knew her past and that she needed living water instead of the water from this well.
He used her past of telling her exactly how many husbands she had had and how she wasn’t even married to the man she was with now, to show her and everyone that no matter what you have done or been through, He is waiting there for you to turn to Him. She did exactly that, telling Him He must be the Messiah, and then running back to her village to say He knew the details of my past, come meet the Messiah. From then on we see transformation in her. We see that Jesus used a drink of water as an ice breaker to reveal Himself. He chose someone who the world viewed as not worthy. But Jesus sees everyone as worthy of His love and grace.
Lets jot down some points real quick:
-He chooses you.
-He meets you in your hiding place.
-He gives you living water.
-He knows all of your past, the why, how, when and where.
-He seeks authentic, heartfelt worship.
-He uses your past to position you, not disqualify you.
Jesus calls women to a purpose. He sees and hears them, knows their power. As we walk with Him we find our purpose. He seeks to reconcile with us to pull us out of our cycle of shame and into His arms.
I had a hard time deciding if this was more grace or transformation but in reality its both. We need Jesus grace like he gave the woman at the well and we need to transform in the way she did to go and tell people about Him. I strive to be transformed like she was, because I’ve already received more grace than I deserve.
